Portugal: – Pestana Hotel Group has announced the opening of the Pestana Churchill Bay, the first Pousada de Portugal in Câmara de Lobos.
The fisherman’s village in Madeira Island is famous for being one of Winston Churchill’s favourite painting locations.
Set in the heart of Câmara de Lobos’ cove, the Pestana Churchill Bay – Pousada & Historic Hotel is located just a 10-minute drive away from the island’s capital, Funchal. Câmara de Lobos itself is a short walk from the Cabo Girão cliffs, which are well known for their suspended glass platform and enticing views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Pestana Hotel Group says that the latest Pousada de Portugal embodies the ethos of the hotel group, by weaving local and cultural heritage into hotels. The 57-room property is located on the seafront itself and features a restaurant, bar, panoramic rooftop pool, gym, sauna and a spa treatment room for an enjoyable stay in Madeira.
The view of the picturesque Câmara de Lobos Bay remains one of the location’s greatest attractions, dating back to a time when British prime minister Sir Winston Churchill and his family vacationed on the island in 1950.
During that visit, Churchill brought over his own easel and painted the bay. Local photographer Raul Perestrello immortalised that moment in pictures that were circulated around the world and brought global recognition to the fishing village.
This location is most commonly known as “Winston Churchill Bay” in honour of the famous politician. At the entrance of the Pestana Churchill Bay – Pousada & Historic Hotel, a bronze sculpture of Churchill that was created by Portuguese artist Martim Velosa welcomes the guests.
Pestana Hotel Group currently owns and manages 12 properties in Madeira (Madeira Island and Porto Santo Island) and later this year, it will open an additional two hotels in Portugal as well as properties in Madrid and New York City.
