Highgate to open The Newbury Boston in early 2020

US: Highgate, in partnership with Major Food Group, has announced plans to open The Newbury Boston at One Newbury Street in the Back Bay neighbourhood.

The project marks the first collaboration between Highgate, a hospitality investment and management company, and Major Food Group (MFG), an acclaimed restaurant and hospitality company.

The property, a Boston landmark for more than 90 years, originally opened in 1927 as one of the first Ritz-Carlton hotels in the US.

Architect Jeffrey Beers will help with the transformation of the building’s new entrance (relocated from Arlington Street to Newbury Street) and public spaces, including the restoration of The Street Bar and ballroom, as well as a private, guests-only library and a state-of-the-art gym.

Many of the building’s original features such as its cobalt blue chandeliers will be incorporated in the redesign.

Led by celebrated designer, Alexandra Champalimaud, the hotel will comprise 286-bedrooms featuring hand-selected furnishings and original artwork, along with exclusive amenities. 42 of the rooms will include wood burning fireplaces, and two presidential suites.

The food and beverage concepts at The Newbury Boston will be headed by MFG, which includes The Street Bar, 16,000 square-feet of event spaces, and a rooftop restaurant with views of New York.

Jeff Zalaznick, co-owner of MFG, said: “We are honoured to take part in one of the most historic restorations in our lifetime, and are excited to bring this elegant hotel back to life with unique hospitality experience and offerings, which will be thoughtfully crafted to respect and celebrate this landmark’s rich history and relationship with the Boston community”.

To celebrate the return of one of Boston’s most iconic social hubs, Highgate and Mfg have collaborated with award-winning branding study Tzelan, specialists in lry hospitality brand development and redesign. Tzelan has commissioned famed photographer Phil Poynter to capture The Newbury’s pre-launch campaign.
