Marriott’s EDITION debuts on the US West Coast

US: The West Hollywood EDITION, on the Sunset Strip, is the brand’s tenth and first on the American West Coast.

The property features 140 bedrooms, as well as 48 suites and 20 residences.

British architect John Pawson created the modern building at 9040 West Sunset Boulevard, and worked with Los Angeles artist, Sterling Ruby, to create a triple-height ceiling installation project, The Scale, in the hotel’s lobby.

The mobile artwork incorporates industrial objects as a reference to the “grittiness” of the Sunset Strip, while also referring to the area’s dense ecosystem through the use of dangling foliage. An outdoor courtyard with a fire feature is at the far end of the lobby.

Ian Schrager, in partnership with Marriott International, envisioned the EDITION brand as a “personal and unique hotel experience”. Commenting on the latest opening, Schrager said: “We are in the Mona Lisa business… we aspire to be the best hotel in California. With architecture, design, entertainment and service, we try to offer something that people have never experienced before”.

“I was lucky enough to be part of West Hollywood’s second cultural rebirth, and now with a whole new wave of hotels, apartments and restaurants, I’m happy to be part of its third renaissance, capturing Sunset Boulevard’s magic and immortalising it with that same ethos,” added Schrager.

The hotel’s restaurant, Ardor, is spearheaded by Michelin-star chef Join Fraser. At the Lobby Bar, The Roof (offering a 360-view from the ocean of Santa Monica to the skyscrapers of downtown LA), and the subterranean club Sunset, guests can enjoy a variety of classic and modern cocktails.

A multimedia performance and event space features JBL and Dolby speaker systems and retractable stadium-style seating, as well as four breakout meeting rooms.

Treatments in the spa include technology-forward therapies and ancient rituals, and the 24-hour gym will have the latest fitness machines including Peloton bicycles.
