US: Starwood’s Aloft brand will operate the converted Mercantile Bank building in Tampa, which is set for a 2014 opening.

Aloft Tampa Downtown will be owned and managed by the Clearwater-based Liberty Group in a joint-venture partnership with Convergent Capital Partners of Tampa. Orlando-based Baker Barrios Architects is the lead architect and interior designer for the project.

The property – the fifth Aloft hotel in Florida – will feature 130 rooms with modern technology, a waterfront pool, a 24-hour fitness centre and a 4,000-square-foot rooftop terrace.

Punit Shah of Liberty Group said: “While we already own several premier hotels in the Tampa Bay area, my family has specifically been focused on developing a hotel in downtown Tampa for years, and this project presents the perfect opportunity to own the hippest hotel in the most dynamic location in Tampa Bay.”
