Cape Town boutique hotel grows its own produce in eco bid

South Africa: The Upper East Side Hotel in Cape Town is growing its own produce in a bid to reduce the food miles of the meals it serves its guests.

The contemporary boutique hotel commissioned specialists Urban Harvest to develop a terrace garden which features 43 sustainably-sourced timber crates that are arranged in three different areas of the hotel’s mid-level terrace.

Speaking to sustainable design website, the hotel’s assistant food and beverage manager Vamana Roux said the crates, which are planted with herbs, fruit and vegetables comprise the first step in the hotel’s food plan.

The hotel is looking to buy a nearby plot which will become a bigger garden that will be serviced by a local orphanage.

The hotel has also implemented other eco measures. Guests are given the option of reusing their towels, there are smart keys to every room, and all waste is recycled.
