US: Hong Kong businessman Jimmy Lai has announced plans to convert the Detroit Boat Club in to a hotel.
The 1902 building on Belle Isle is currently the home of the local rowing club but is in a dilapidated state.
Lai, the owner of the Vintage Hotel group, has proposed a $40 million project to turn it in to a 100 to 120 room hotel with restaurant and mooring facilities.
Mark Simon, Lai’s representative, said the company would restore the building to its original appearance. “You don’t hear this said often, but Detroit is really a pretty city. The riverfront is spectacular,” he said.
