In the latest of a regular series, we check in with leading hoteliers and general managers to get an exclusive glimpse into their careers, their lives and their ambitions. This time, we speak to Mel Brown, general manager at Artist Residence Penzance.

I enjoy my job because…

Of the team I get to work with every single day! We all get on so well, have fun and genuinely care about each other and I think this comes across to our guests. It helps to create a great atmosphere!

I find my job challenging because…

I love hospitality so much and I try so hard to make sure everyone has an amazing time. So when someone doesn’t, I can take it personally and it gets me down. That can be quite tough.

My best achievement in business was…

Sounds cheesy… but I think my best achievement was starting to work for Artist Residence! I have grown up with the company and I am so proud of what Justin and Charlie have achieved.

My worst mistake in business was…

Charlie and Justin have taught me so much! But one of the main things is that mistakes are just an opportunity to learn, grow and develop. They really have taught me to always keep moving forward.

What I am yet to accomplish is…

World domination? Only joking!

If I could change one thing about myself, it would be…

To not be quite so sensitive; I often take things to heart.

If I could change one thing about the industry, it would be…

I would like for more people to see hospitality as a real career… I still get asked “So… are you studying?” or “What do you want to do?” like hospitality isn’t a legitimate career choice.

My top three bucket list items are…

Go to Nashville – I am a little bit in love with country music and obsessed with Dolly Parton!

To learn how to play the harp.

Go and visit my Brother in Australia.

My life philosophy is…

My Mum always taught me to “treat others how you would like to be treated!” and I am going to stick to that.

My favourite song, book or film is…

Anything written by Jane Austen; I love a classic!

My ideal weekend would be…

A long lazy morning bath followed by brunch with my Mum, Dad and dog Lacey. Then a walk on the beach before heading home to curl up with a good book.

Be in the know.
