UK: The site of the former Quality Hotel on Plymouth Hoe will be redeveloped in a £50 million scheme featuring an apartment block and a boutique hotel.
Developer Henley Real Estate has been selected as preferred bidder to develop the plot, which was the site of the now demolished Quality Hotel.
The scheme will feature a 60-bedroom boutique hotel, with conference facilities, a gym and spa, and a fine-dining restaurant. On the ground floor there will be a bistro and bar overlooking a large terrace.
Alongside the hotel there will be a separate tower comprising 80 residential apartments.
Called 1620, the name of the development is linked to the date of the sailing of the Mayflower, and the developer plans to have the scheme completed in time for the Mayflower 400 anniversary in 2020.
Council leader Ian Bowyer said: “This is fantastic news. To have acquired the site, demolished an eyesore building and attract a new exciting development in less than 12 months just shows what can be done with a bit of drive and courage. We took a bold and proactive approach and it is paying off. Not only will this development deliver more high-quality hotel rooms in time for Mayflower 400, it helps the city up its game as a year-round destination.
Co-founder and director of Henley Real Estate Chris Henley said: “This is a phenomenal scheme for both Henley Real Estate and for the city as a whole. We are now excited to get on with delivering this statement development on what is one of the most prestigious sites in the country.”
His fellow director John Henley added: “We have already received enormous interest in our plans for this site and we look forward to engaging with both the community and businesses of Plymouth as we are confident this is a scheme that the city will be proud of for decades to come.”
