De Niro’s London boutique hotel gets planning consent

UK: Hollywood star Robert De Niro’s Covent Garden boutique hotel project has been given the green light by planners.

Westminster City Council has approved plans for The Wellington Hotel, which will be constructed on the site of six existing buildings, three of which are Grade II listed.

The 83-room property will include a luxury spa, two restaurants and a central courtyard. It is a joint venture by De Niro with two other developers – UK property firm Capco and America’s BD Hotels.

De Niro and BD Hotels also co-own the Greenwich Hotel in New York.

Westminster City Council deputy leader Robert Davis said: “This is one of the finest schemes we have considered for Covent Garden in years. The design is of the highest quality and it fits the bill as a Covent Garden building that meshes the new with the old. The hotel will attract visitors from all over the world.”

Ian Hawksworth, chief executive of Capco, added: “We are delighted to receive approval for this exciting project. It will be our first landmark hotel within Covent Garden and become an iconic venue for London.”
Work will start next year, with an expected completion date of 2019.
