Canada: Delta Hotels and Resorts has announced it will operate a hotel at the Barrel Yards development in Waterloo, Ontario.
The news comes as the nearby Kitchener Delta hotel has been sold and will not operate under the Delta name from March 2013.
The nine-storey hotel was originally scheduled to open in August, but technical issues during construction set the project back about 10 months and another boutique hotel operator from Ontario pulled out of the project. Set to open in summer 2013, the Delta will be Waterloo’s first four-star hotel and will cost around CAN$36 million to develop.
Ken Greene, president of Delta Hotels and Resorts, which operates 40 hotels and resorts across Canada, said: “It will be the best property in Waterloo.”
He added that Waterloo’s strong technology sector played an important part in siting the hotel there: “You have to have a great amount of support behind it. You have to have the location, you have to have great community support, you have to have the support of the city and you have to manage it well and you have to have the right brand name attached to it.”
