US: Thor Equities Group has opened the luxury 114-room hotel in New York City’s SoHo district, managed by Highgate.

Located on Grand Street, the hotel marks the first hospitality brand from Thor Equities Group, an urban real estate development, leasing and management firm. A total of 10 different room categories are available, including five suites, alongside a restaurant from Michelin-starred chef George Mendes.

Each guest room offers city views and the Gallery Penthouse on the 16th floor comes with a separate living room and dining room with 12-person table, along with 1,300 square feet of open floor space.

The hotel’s main restaurant Veranda has been designed in the style of a greenhouse. It has a fully retractable roof for open-air dining. Chef Mendes, whose Portuguese restaurant Aldea earned him a Michelin star, has partnered with David Rabin to open Veranda.

Two separate bars, one with a terrace and the other with its own entrance, form part of the restaurant offering.

On the second floor, Jumpin Jacks serves coffee, pastries and other to-go options during the day before turning into a cocktail bar in the evening.

The hotel’s lower level is home to The Signature Room – a 3,100 square foot event venue. It comprises a private dining room, bar and seating area.

Jimmy, set 18 stories high, is a rooftop bar with pool deck. During the colder months guests can sit inside in the lounge area, whereas in warmer weather can spill out onto the roof deck.

Throughout ModernHaus SoHo, a modern art collection is featured, including dozens of paintings and sculptures from Alexander Calder, Hans Hartung, George Condo, Harland Miller, Jean Dubuffet, Hans Hofmann, Nicolas Party and Kaws. Interior design consultant Melissa Bowers worked alongside Jack J. Sitt, director of Thor Equities Group, to develop the hotel’s design.

Sitt said: “ModernHaus SoHo will be an extension of the neighbourhood’s creative and artistic spirit. As a resident of SoHo myself, I’m proud to help lead a project that breathes new life into the community after such a long and challenging year. Every element has been created in pursuit of greater connectedness between the guests, the city, and SoHo’s heritage. The building’s art and design reflects, and is inspired by, its immediate surroundings.”

He continued: “With ModernHaus SoHo, our goal was to create a communal living room and gathering point in SoHo for New Yorkers and visitors alike. We’re excited to welcome guests into our new home, that will be known for its prime location, contemporary touches, exceptional outdoor space, Michelin-star culinary talent and first-rate social offerings.”

Thor Equities Group operates a portfolio totally $20 billion with a development pipeline in excess of 50 million square feet. It has assets in London, Paris, Madrid and Milan, as well as Mexico and Latin America.

Highgate is a real estate investment and hospitality management company with a presence in New York, Boston, Miami, San Francisco and Honolulu and expanding in the Caribbean and Latin America.
