Oslo: Nordic Hotels & Resorts has opened Sommerro, a 231-room Art Deco hotel, in Oslo’s West End.

Housed in the former headquarters of Oslo Lysverker, the city’s original electrical company, Sommerro has been developed by local firm LPO Architects in collaboration with GrecoDeco. Museum director and art critic, Sune Nordgren, has curated a collection of contemporary and original artwork throughout the property.

Of the 231 rooms, 56 are branded residences. Amenities include seven restaurants and bars, meeting and event spaces, a 100-seat gilded theatre, a wellness space with a gym, and a rooftop pool, sauna and terrace.

Several of the dining venues will be outsourced to local brands such as Barramon, a Spanish tapas and wine bar, and restaurant Plah spearheaded by Thai chef Terje Ommundsen. Across the different outlets, menus will offer afternoon teas, alcohol-free cocktails, Nordic-Japanese cuisine, and more.

Resident jazz musician and composer Maren Selvaag will kick off a pop-up music event this September, inspired the music scene of the 1930s. Hosted in the theatre, additional performances will include a series of brunch and film classics.

Opening in November, Vestkantbadet – one of Norway’s public baths from 1932 – has been resorted as a 15,000-square-foot subterranean urban wellness retreat. It will offer Roman baths, infrared sauna, a cold plunge pool, as well as treatments such as laser therapy, cold water breathing sessions, nutritionist workshops, two-day electric sauna boat retreats in partnership with KOK, sleep masterclasses and more.

In March 2023, Sommerro will also launch Villa Inkognito – an 11-suite private residence adjacent to the hotel. The villa will provide several living rooms, an open kitchen, bar, fitness room and an outdoor area.

“Sommerro is more than a hotel,” said Petter Stordalen, founder of Nordic Choice Hotels, now known as Strawberry. “It is an iconic building housing years of history, located in one of Oslo’s most vibrant and exciting areas. We want everyone to feel at home at Sommerro, whether you are a guest or a local seeking a place to hang out with friends, work, or simply relax in beautiful surroundings. We believe that Sommerro will take Oslo to the next level of hospitality, and I am really looking forward to opening the doors to this fantastic project, bringing the building back to life for more generations to come.”

Sommerro  is a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts’ Legend Collection.
