UK: Wellbeing lifestyle brand Zedwell Hotels has opened its second site in London, submerged below Great Russell Street near Tottenham Court Road.
Zedwell Tottenham Court Road has been repurposed from a former car park and is accessed via an elevator which takes guests below ground.
Facilities include a 24/7 front desk with self check-in kiosks, communal spaces, and 187 rooms or “cocoons” which come in a variety of sizes, sleeping from one person up to four people. Each cocoon features Hypnos beds, circadian rhythm lighting and rain showers.
Purified air circulates throughout the subterranean space and noise-reducing walls, floors and doors have been constructed to limit distractions.
Darija Zivni Aziz, head of interior design and concept architect at Zedwell, said: “This is a really exciting time for us, not just for our story, but for the city of London as a whole. Repurposing the former underground space into high quality accommodation is a game-changer and whilst not without its own challenges, has paved the way for a new kind of construction in the capital.”
Aziz continued: “Sleep is at the core of wellbeing study and it is a primary component to good health. Our new hotel takes the concept of sleep promotion to another level, applying all the Zedwell elements that made our first hotel so popular with such a large number of returning guests and well-being advocates. It enables one to focus inward and find harmony at their core, to explore their values and inhibitions that are rooted deep within – something synonymous with the physical motion of going deep under the ground, immersed in the foundation of nature.”
The Zedwell brand debuted in 2020 in London Piccadilly and is operated by Criterion Hospitality, part of asset management company Criterion Capital.
