UAE: InterContinental Hotels Group will open its second Hotel Indigo in the UAE, in Dubai’s The Sustainable City, which is currently under construction.

IHG signed a management agreement with Sustainable City owners Diamond Group at this week’s Arabian Travel Market to operate the 170-room property when it opens in 2017.

The property will be 100 per cent powered by solar energy and will source produce from an organic farm on the development.

Pascal Gauvin, chief operating officer, India, Middle East & Africa, IHG, said: “The owners, the Diamond Group, are developing a city which is all based on sustainability of water, energy, waste management, and even economic sustainability. They were looking for a hotel operator and a brand, so we are developing Hotel Indigo because it’s our lifestyle boutique hotel. Every hotel is unique, there is no one that is the same. We felt this sustainability story is absolutely in line with what we are looking for.”

“The hotel will also be sustainable, in waste management, energy, with solar panels, and water management. All our water will be treated and recycled. There will be a greenfield within Sustainable City where they will grow their vegetables and herbs,” he added.

The Sustainable City complex will include residences, a green school, a community centre, an equestrian centre, and solar-covered parking lots, as well as tourist attractions such as a Planetarium and a grass Amphitheatre for hosting events.
