The Luxury Collection opens Budapest property

Hungary: The Luxury Collection by Marriott has opened its first Hungarian location, the Matild Palace.

Matild Palace, located in Budapest, is a historic property built over 120 years ago by Her Imperial and Royal Highness Maria Klotild of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. At the time, the building, which is now a UNESCO world heritage site, served as a social hub for the city.

The building, owned by Özyer Group, has undergone renovations for the past five years led by interior designer Maria Vafiadis and architects Péter Dajka and Puhl Antal. Great care was taken throughout renovation to preserve the heritage of the building.

The newly renovated property has become a 130-room hotel, with 111 rooms and 19 suites and rates that start at €450 per night. Rooms, which are all over four metres tall, offer views of the Danube and of the city and are decorated to highlight Hungarian heritage. There are four types of guestrooms that take inspiration from 20th century Budapest and the lifestyle of the duchess.

Connecting family rooms are also available.

Loft guest rooms, which are dedicated to the duchess’s artisan friends through their contemporary decor, are located at the rooftop with views of the city through sloping windows.

The Crown Tower Suite is three-stories tall and offers 360-degree views of the city.

The Maria Klotid Royal Suite is meant to mimic the duchesses private suite with spacious rooms and extravagant decor.

The hotel will also offer a variety of dining options for guests under the direction of chef Wolfgang Puck. Spago by Wolfgang Puck, Puck’s well-known restaurant, will open its first Hungarian location in the hotel and will serve traditional Hungarian cuisine with modern twists. Puck will also oversee the Duchess, a rooftop bar set to open soon, a secret liquor library, and Matild Café and Cabaret, a restaurant imitation of historic high society in Budapest. Both Spago and Matild Cafe and Cabaret will offer outdoor, street dining.

The property also features meeting and event spaces, a spa, and a gym. Swan Spa strives to deliver a Hungarian-inspired wellness experience and also includes a salt and steam room.

Candice D’Cruz, vice president-luxury brands, Europe, Middle East, & Africa for Marriott International, said: “We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone moment in the growth of The Luxury Collection brand with the opening of Matild Palace, a hotel that will define the destination of Budapest. The property allows our guests to realize the fantasy of living within in a royal palace, elevated with modern amenities and impeccable service, and we look forward to welcoming them as they discover this timeless and inspiring city.”
