Spain: The 41-room Terreno Barrio Hotel has opened in Palma, designed by architecture studio OHLAB.
Originally developed as a hillside retreat for aristocrats and artists in the 19th century, the El Terreno neighbourhood is known for its nightlife. The area is currently being redeveloped and features independent galleries, restaurants, and artist’s studios.
The Terreno Barrio Hotel occupies two interconnected buildings: a restored 1930s building with 21 rooms, alongside a contemporary timber-clad structure with 20 rooms.
Within the original building, amenities include a rooftop cocktail bar, the Destape restaurant led by chef Gabriel Conti, and a speak-easy club called Dos Rombos.
In the new building, there’s a spa, hammam, gym, coworking space, cinema, rooftop pool, and pop-up gallery. It has been designed in accordance with Passivhaus standards and has achieved LEED Platinum certification.
Studio Roses helped to develop the hotel’s brand identity. It is located between the waterfront Paseo Marítimo and the pine forests surrounding Bellver Castle.
“We wanted to create a hotel that belongs to the neighbourhood as much as it belongs to its guests,” said co-founder Lydia Piñero. “A place where travellers experience Palma from the inside – through design, food, culture and community.”
Hotel director Nabil Aquilera added: “This project was conceived to work not just for visitors but for local residents too. We want to give more back to the neighbourhood than we take from it. Terreno Hotel is not conceived as a tourist object imposed on its context, but as a device for exchange; a hotel that, before being a hotel, aims to be an extension of the barrio.”
