Fancy footwork

Signature Living’s announcement that it is looking for a site for a George Best-themed hotel in Manchester is the latest in a series of hospitality ventures associated with the beautiful game in the north-west of England.

The same operator already has a hotel in Liverpool, The Shankly, named after the legendary Liverpool FC manager. It has a museum area full of Shankly and LFC-related memorabilia, including, believe it or not, a congratulatory telegram to Shankly from astronaut Neil Armstrong.

The George Best hotel will have a similar set-up, and Signature Living has the blessing and cooperation of the Manchester United and Northern Ireland legend’s family for the venture.

It seems that Man U players have been inextricably linked with the hospitality sector in recent years. Two United stars of a more modern vintage, Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs, have formed GG Hospitality, the company behind the Hotel Football brand. They also have a range of other projects in the pipeline, including a boutique hotel in Manchester’s former Stock Exchange.

And further afield, former United star Cristiano Ronaldo, in his own understated way, has launched the CR7 range of hotels in collaboration with Portuguese operator Pestana. His first property in Madeira is already open, with further hotels in Lisbon, Madrid and New York in the pipeline.
