US: The Driskill Hotel in downtown Austin has begun a full-scale renovation led by Pixiu Investments, Woodbine Development Corporation, and Hyatt Hotels Corporation, under The Unbound Collection by Hyatt.

The restoration coincidences with the celebration of the hotel’s upcoming 140th anniversary in 2026.

Originally opened in 1886 by cattle baron Colonel Jesse Driskill, the historic property has long hailed as Texas’ first luxury hotel and a hub for politicians, dignitaries, and cultural figures.

The project will encompass all 189 guestrooms and suites, the hotel’s grand lobby and historic staircase, meeting and event spaces, and its beloved culinary venues.

The scope of work also includes the addition of a new 2,800-square-foot ballroom, a cocktail bar, a curated retail space, and refreshed common areas throughout the landmark property.

The renovation is unfolding in two major phases: the first, debuting in Fall 2025, will unveil the redesigned 110 Tower Guest Rooms originally constructed in 1929, alongside a fitness centre and food and beverage sites operated by Austin-based MML Hospitality, while phase two, scheduled for completion by Summer 2026, will focus on the original guestroom tower’s 74 rooms, the main lobby and staircase, and the introduction of a retail boutique.

T. Dupree Scovell, managing partner at Woodbine said: “Pixiu and Woodbine purchased The Driskill with a commitment to stewarding it for generations to come. In addition to preserving this Texas treasure’s storied legacy and unique traditions, this historic renovation will bring Texans together from all over the state to enjoy the Grand Dame of our state in fresh and new ways. Whether our guests come to the property for a meal, a meeting or a momentous occasion, this transformation is going to elevate the experience they have with us – as well as the caliber of the memories they take away. We couldn’t be more excited about that.”

Design and branding are being led by Dallas-based SWOON, the Studio.

Joslyn Taylor of SWOON, the Studio said: “The reimagining of The Driskill isn’t about a look or style—it’s about celebrating the history and embracing things that last. Our goal is for The Driskill to be full of unique, immersive moments and modern comforts, while remaining timeless.”

Throughout the renovation, The Driskill remains open and operational.
