UK: The High Tor Hotel in Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, is set to open later this month, five years after being gutted by a fire.
The 14-room property is a Grade II listed building dating back to the 19th Century and is believed to have belonged to Admiral Nelson’s contemporary General Collingwood
The building was ravaged by fire in 2007 and has undergone a £3 million refurbishment by the current owners. It will feature a bar and 52-seat serving modern British cuisine.
The owner of the property, who does not wish to be identified, said: “When we first arrived here you could walk in and see all the way to the attic due to the fire damage. There was only one staircase remaining. It was a derelict building and it was damp.”
“Everything has been made to the exact specifications of the original house,” he added. “We had special cutters made at a local wood yard. All the materials that have been supplied to the hotel have been locally sourced apart from the insulation.”
