US: The Payne Mansion in the Western Addition neighbourhood of San Francisco, is to become a boutique hotel called The Mansion on Sutter.
Located at 1409 Sutter Street, the historic property is revered as one of the city’s rare pre-1906 Victorian homes. Recognized on the National Registry of Historic Places, the 13-bedroom mansion was built in 1881 by horticulturalist Theodore Payne, under the auspices of Irish architect William F. Curlett.
According to Fortune magazine, the property – previously San Francisco’s most expensive Airbnb rental at $10,000 a night – is being transformed into a hotel following its acquisition by hospitality and restaurant entrepreneur Bernard Rosenson, who owns properties across California.
The Mansion on Sutter is set to debut this autumn, with a French restaurant called 1881 overseen by chef Jean-Paul Peluffo, previously at Le Colonial. The hotel design has been entrusted to San Francisco designer Timothy Quillen, who is adding Victorian and Art Nouveau touches.
