UK: Remodel of Bethnal Green art deco building will feature hotel
Southern Grove has received planning permission for the redevelopment of the former Rex Cinema on Bethnal Green Road, including the go-ahead to convert part of the building into a luxury boutique hotel.
The mixed-use developer will focus on building the development around the formal 1930s cinema experience. Following the launch of The Rex, Southern Grove will target new hotel and leisure development opportunities throughout the capital in a bid to cement its position as an emerging lifestyle and hospitality brand.
The London Borough of Tower Hamlets has approved plans for the restoration of the original art deco façade, a single screen cinema, roof top bar, restaurant and a 130-bed boutique hotel.
Tom Slingsby, managing director of Southern Grove, said: “The Rex will offer a genuinely new format in an already exciting part of town and demonstrates the scale of our ambition. We are proud of our track record in delivering planning on this complex site within just seven months and are actively looking for similar opportunities that lend themselves to exciting new leisure concepts.”
