Malaysia: The Ormond Group’s latest design-led property, in the historic Chow Kit neighbourhood of Kuala Lumpur, has been recognised by Travel + Leisure as one of the top new hotels for 2020.
The Chow Kit marks the group’s first boutique hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Comprising 113 rooms and suites, accommodation is fitted with a smart TV, open wardrobe and desk space, a self-pickup room service concept, and bespoke toiletries.
The interiors of the hotel, developed by the award-winning, Brooklyn-based deign practice Studio Tack, are inspired by the bars of the 70s and 80s in the Chow Kit area.
Throughout the hotel, there are featured works from crafts people in Malaysia including Shan Shan Lim, Bendang Artisan, The Alphabet Press, May Kamal, and Jeanie Botanicals – all presented in the hotel’s Art Programme, curated by Liza Ho of OurArt Projects.
Gareth Lim, CEO of Ormond Group, said: “The Chow Kit is proud to be recognised by Travel + Leisure on their 2020 It List for being one for the best new hotels in the world. Our new property has a unique design that celebrates simplified luxury while maintaining a strong cultural connection to the Chow Kit neighbourhood.”
“Our team have been hard at work to provide travellers an inspiring and memorable experience in Kuala Lumpur. Great design, experience and service is the cornerstone of every Ormond property and we’re grateful for this recognition. Chow Kit is one of the most underrated neighbourhoods in Southeast Asia and we look forward to welcoming all adventure and culture seekers.”
Each year, Travel + Leisure compile a list of new hotels that offer a “special, holistic experience based on location, ambiance, service and amenities.”
Jacqueline Gifford, editor in chief at Travel + Leisure, said: With over 70 honourees—including a Loire Valley château and a series of lodges in Bhutan—our annual It List is packed with hotels that make you feel spoiled, nurtured, and seamlessly connected to the outside world.”
