UK: Plans have been submitted to Torbay Council to redevelop the former Debenhams site in Torquay into a six-storey boutique hotel with a rooftop bar and restaurant.
The proposed development covers the former department store on The Strand and several neighbouring properties on The Terrace as part of a wider regeneration project for the waterfront area.
Plans include a new rooftop restaurant and bar for the hotel overlooking Torquay Harbour, as well as new ground floor commercial spaces. Public realm improvements, landscaping, highway works and supporting infrastructure are also included within the proposal.
A separate listed building application has also been submitted for No. 8 The Strand. The plans include partial demolition of external structures and alterations to the roof and interior of the building.
The proposed scheme would be delivered by developer Milligan, with contractor Willmott Dixon acting as primary development partner.
Businesses in the area have expressed concern about the potential for compulsory purchase orders if agreements are not reached with property owners. Torbay Council has previously said it would prefer to work with landowners and businesses on a voluntary basis.
Torbay Council has now registered the application and it is open for public consultation. A decision will be made by the council’s planning committee at a later date.
