In the latest of a regular series, we check in with leading hoteliers and general managers to get an exclusive glimpse into their careers, their lives and their ambitions. This time, we speak to Adrian Ellis, general manager at The Lowry Hotel.

I enjoy my job because…

Of the variety that the job provides. Working in hospitality has given me the opportunity to meet a wide range of different people within the industry. I thoroughly enjoy the diversity in my day: from seeing major events from beginning to end, to making a difference in young people’s careers.

I find my job challenging because…

Of external factors that are out of our control. So many influences can have an effect on plans that we make at The Lowry Hotel such as economic irregularities and recessions, including the outbreak of Coronavirus.

My best achievement in business was…

Apart from my current role as general manager at the five-star Lowry Hotel, the re-opening of the Fairmont Baku Azerbaijan. This was a huge challenge, as there was little hospitality in the country at the time and the project took two years.

My worst mistake in business was…

Not spending enough time working with school leavers in the past. The hospitality and hotel industry are struggling with recruiting young people at the moment, and although The Lowry Hotel focuses on this now, I think there was definitely opportunity to work on this sooner.

What I am yet to accomplish is…

To establish a training academy to attract young people into the industry for both Manchester and the North West.

If I could change one thing about myself, it would be…

To speak more languages. We have so many guests from all over the world and it would be incredible to be able to expand my vocabulary and interact with people from all over the globe.

If I could change one thing about the industry, it would be…

For there to be a better perception of working in hospitality as a profession.

My top three bucket list items are…

Achieving a world record; contributing £1 million to charities; and achieving the Hotelier of the Year Cateys industry award for my time at The Lowry Hotel.

My life philosophy is…

Be polite, energised and passionate about everything you do.

My favourite song, book or film is…

The book – The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino.

My ideal weekend would be…

Walking in the lake district with my wife and my dog.

Be in the know.
