The Epicurean, a boutique hotel project in Tampa, Florida, is set to start construction later this year.

The site is adjacent to, and owned by, the Bern’s Steak House. Initial plans were to build a 75-unit boutique condominium-hotel with a spa, wine store, rooftop pool and sun deck. The condo units would have been available for around the $200,000 range, with owners entitled to 45 days a year usage and a share in the rental income. This project was put on hold in 2008 when Bern’s owner David Laxer announced he had been unable to secure financing.

But now the South Howard Avenue project will be a 140-room boutique hotel, operated under Marriott’s Autograph Collection.

“The hotel is happening,” said Bern’s spokeswoman Brooke Palmer.
