Peru: Orient-Express opens the 55-suite Palacio Nazarenas in Cuzco.

The former 16th century convent has been described as Peru’s most eagerly anticipated hotel, and features state-of-the-art oxygenated rooms (to combat altitude sickness), Cuzco’s first outdoor infinity pool, and a restaurant overseen top Peruvian chef Virgilio Martinez.

During a four-year renovation, architects and archaeologists uncovered a numerous Inca artifacts which are being showcased throughout the hotel.

Original Inca walls have been preserved beneath the glass floors of treatment rooms at the Hypnôze spa, and murals and friezes on the walls date from Cuzco’s Spanish colonial heyday. Each suite will be provided with with a full cocktail making set, with instructions and a recipe book.

Laurent Carrasset, managing director for Orient-Express Peru, said: “The rebirth of Palacio Nazarenas is a complex project, but one that is Orient-Express through and through. Ever since the company embarked on the revival of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in 1978, breathing new life into historic icons has become one of its hallmarks.”
