US: The former Zahn’s department store in downtown Racine is to be converted in to an 80-room boutique hotel.
The $27 million proposal by Milwaukee developer Dominion Properties will expand and restore the historic building, overlooking Monument Square. The resulting hotel could open in May 2021.
It will feature a rooftop penthouse, a bar with open-air seating, and solar panels on the roof. The first floorill become a banquet space to accommodate up to 180 people, a cafe with outdoor tables next to Monument Square, and a large lobby with a fireplace.
The project will restore the 1925 building’s exterior, including recreating terra cotta features that were removed years ago. A four-storey addition will be built onto the south side of the historic Zahn’s structure for the hotel.
