It’s heartening to see the International Tourism Partnership publish its list of collective goals to tackle social and environmental issues facing the hospitality industry.
The goals contribute towards the organisation’s “Vision for 2030”. They include a drive to employ young people in the hospitality industry, reduction in carbon emissions, the implementation of water stewardship programmes, and the tackling of human rights issues in hotel labour.
The sector has been paying lip service to sustainability for too long, and it’s high time the issues outlined in the ITP’s goals are taken more seriously, for the sake of the planet and for future generations.
While implementing some sustainability measures will adversely affect a hotel’s bottom line, it’s often overlooked that a sustainably run property can make significant savings on its energy costs. It’s time for action on sustainability.
