UK: Developer GB Group has unveiled plans to convert a disused arts centre in Sunderland city centre into a 125-room boutique hotel.

The plans by architects Faulkner Brown also include a restaurant, bar and meeting rooms. The hotel is part of the University of Sunderland’s masterplan, and a planning application for the scheme is expected to be brought to the City Council’s South Sunderland Development Control planning committee in the autumn. Subject to approval, work on site could begin as early as spring 2013.

GB Group is in discussions with operators over who will manage the property.

Sunderland City Council’s cabinet secretary, Councillor Mel Speding said: “This is really excellent news for our city centre. Not only can Sunderland benefit from the additional quality hotel space that we so desperately need, we’re also getting a well thought out modern design coupled with the restoration of one of our historic assets.”

The scheme plans can be viewed until September at www.sunderland.gov.uk
